Winner in the Commercial category of the 2010 Concrete Countertop Design Competition is Peter Zoller, ConcretePete LLC, Boulder, Colo., for the reception desk at The Spot Climbing Gym, Boulder, Colo.

Zoller writes: The Spot Climbing Gym, a popular indoor climbing gym in Boulder, was expanding and remodeling early in summer of 2010. The remodel included a reception desk. ConcretePete LLC was approached to provide the new reception desk. The desk consists of a 12-foot-long, L-shaped, 4-inch-thick GFRC piece and a vertical wall panel, also in GFRC. Openings were cast into the top to accommodate computer cables. The desk also features a puzzle seam.

To reflect the sandstone and granite outcroppings around Boulder, Colo., a mix of reddish/brown acid stain and natural gray concrete were chosen as the color scheme for this project. The Spot Climbing Gym’s logo was cast in rubber and inlaid into the vertical section to create a three-dimensional bas relief of the logo. The inset section was then acid stained to visually tie it to the horizontal acid stained counter. The vertical wall panel in natural gray also features a rock edge to echo the texture of the climbing walls in the gym.
